1854 Pattern Grenadier Guards Officer's Sword by Wilkinson

Description: A superior example of the 1854 pattern guards officers sword. The blade is in fine condition and is superbly etched to both sides with the royal cipher plus the Grenadier Guards battle honours. The blade has been vigorously sharpened, probably while the owner was on active service (see below) and fits the scabbard very well. The shagreen and wiring to the grip are intact and undamaged, though plating to the guard is worn in places and is tarnished overall. The dress scabbard is in good condition, though it has some wear commensurate with its age.

Provenance: This sword was purchased in September 1861 by Ambrose Goddard Esq. By March 1885 Goddard had been promoted to Major and was serving with his battalion in the Sudan. he died on board HMS Tyre while enroute homeward. Full details supplied on purchase.
