1897 Pattern Infantry Officer's Sword By Wilkinson Patent Sold Hilt 1908 ERVII

Description A very attractive example of this rare type of sword from the reign of Edward VII. The outer part of the guard retains almost allof its original plating, though there is some loss to its interior probably due to use. The grip is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, and the wiring is present and undamaged.

The blade, which was plated at the time of manufacture, is in good order with just some very minor spots of staining. The Wilkison trade mark at the ricasso is clear as are the Royal Arms of Edward VII to each side of the blade. The blade is numbered 41577 for October 1908.

The leather service scabbard is in good order, with just some slight loss to the chape, and come with its original frog for the Sam Browne belt.

Provenance Formerly the property of Lawrence Jamieson Torrie who was born in Bangalore, India, on 23rd March 1899, his father was a Lt Col in the Indian Army. The London Gazette for 12th October 1907 states: Royal Irish: Gentleman Cadet Lawrence Jamieson Torrie to be Second Lt. Torrie then served in the 26th Punjabi Regiment of the Indian army until being seconded into the Royal Scots in 1914 with the rank of temporary Captain. He was severely wounded during The Great War, though he continued to serve until 25th May 1919 when he reliquished his commission, and spent the last year of his service career in the Royal Air Force.

Torrie served at home, in India, China and France and is noted as being able to speak Urdu and Pushto. He became a golf course architect on retiring from the forces and died in 1961.
