SWORDS FOR SALE

1897 Pattern Infantry Officer's Sword by Pillin - VR Cypher

Description: This is a particularly fine example of a Pillin made 1897 pattern sword; it is quite rare to find this pattern of sword from the last years of Victoria’s reign. The blade is numbered 100968 which I think puts the date of manufacture as 1900. The ricasso bears the name of the retailer Bartels & Co, though the brass plug on the other side clearly bears the Pillin logo. Both the blade and the hilt are plated, though I think that this is their original condition rather than later work. The shagreen of the grip is in good order, the brass wiring is tight and the blade is firm in the hilt. The blade is nicely engraved and carries the VR cypher to both sides. The sword is accompanied by a ceremonial scabbard, which is likewise in excellent order, and a leather sword knot.

Provenance: None known.
