SWORDS FOR SALE

1857 Royal Engineer Officers Sword by Thurkle

Description: A very handsome sword in a much sought after pattern by the renowned maker Thurkle

There is some slight loss to the wiring on the grip and a little light staining to the blade, but otherwise this sword is in good condition. The blade is etched with the VR cipher to both sides, as well as the owners initials of C.B.T.

The scabbard is in good order, with both rings present and no dings or other defects. It has been painted, which I think is original, which could indicate that this sword was carried on active service.

Retailed by Hobson & Sons of London who were active from 1873 onwards, so the sword was made after this date.

Provenance: It is highly likely that C.B.T are the initials of Christopher Birdwood Thomson, 1st Baron Thomson PC (13 April 1875 – 5 October 1930). He served as an officer in the Royal Engineers during the Second Boer War, when he was mentioned in despatches, and the First World War. After WWI he went on to serve as a Labour minister and peer. He served as Secretary of State for Air under Ramsay MacDonald in 1924 and between 1929 and 1930, when he was killed in the R101 disaster.
