SWORDS FOR SALE

1845 Pattern Infantry Officer's Sword - Wilkinson Patent Solid Hilt

Description: A fair example of this rare type of sword with a very interesting provenance.

The hilt has elements missing i.e.. the gilded steel backstrap and the wiring. There is no damage, e.g knocks or deflections of the metal, to the hilt and it retains some of its original gilding. If a replacement backstrap could be sourced it should be possible to restore the hilt to some extent.

The blade is in good condition for its age and retains much of its original polish, with just a few areas of dis-colouration. The fine quality etching is still well defined, though a little rubbed at the ricasso. The blade is numbered 9669 and was made in March 1859 (see below for the Wilkinsons Register entry for this sword). It is etched with the VR cypher plus the arms of the Irish Clan O’Meara, though the motto below it is that of the Scottish Clan Stewart.

The scabbard is in poor condition with multiple dents and scrapes, though it is complete and retains both of its suspension rings and its wooden liner.

Provenance: This sword was purchased in March 1859 by William Henry Perry Meara who was at that time a Major in the 5th Regiment of Foot (later The Northumberland Fusiliers). Maj Meara joined the 5th as a 2nd Lt from the Royal Military College in 1846. He was a Captain in 1857 when he was involved in the Indian Mutiny and subsequently received the Defence of Lucknow clasp to the Indian Mutiny Medal. Maj Meara retired from the army in 1865 and died in 1868 in his native county of Waterford in Ireland.

Price: Final sale price witheld.
