SWORDS FOR SALE

1821 Pattern Heavy Cavalry Officer's Sword by Wilkinson No 14634 for 1866

Description: This top quality officer’s fighting sword from Wilkinson is in fine overall condition.

The silver wiring to the grip is in good condition with just some minor losses while the shagreen has wear commensurate with its age. The guard is in good order with no damage or deformation.

The slightly curved blade has minimal staining and carries the royal cipher for VR to both sides as well as the badge of clan Johnstone and the owners initials W W J.

The service leather scabbard is in good condition overall with just a contemporary repair to the chape to show its age.

While this is clearly a heavy cavalry pattern undress sword it is my opinion that it was carried by WWHJ in preference to the standard light cavalry 1821 3-bar pattern as it offers better protection for the hand. The army would finally recognise this when cavalry officers of light, as well as heavy, regiments began to use the 1821 pattern heavy cavalry sword from 1896 onward.

Provenance: Purchased for Wentworth William Hope-Johnstone by a Mr Cox in 1866.

Wentworth William Hope Johnstone was born in Moffat in 1848. His father was William James Hope Johnstone who died in 1850, his grandfather, also John James, lived at Raehills Dumfriedshire an estate of 16,000 acres and also owned Annandale.

In 1851 Wentworth was living in Hove, Brighton, with his mother Octavia Hope-Johnston, daughter of Lord Macdonald.

In 1861 he was living at 57 South St St Georges Hanover Square London.

The Scotsman of 29 Dec 1866 noted that Wentworth, while riding with the Dunfrieshire Fox Hounds, was ‘a bold and fearless rider’; while attempting to jump a river his horse fell back and was drowned.
